Far Eastern Federal University improved its position in the QS University Rankings: BRICS 2016. During the reporting year, FEFU climbed four points and ranked 94th among universities in the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa). The rankings cover 250 universities, including 55 Russian ones.

QS University Rankings: BRICS has been published by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds from 2013, and right from the start FEFU enters its Top 100 group. The leading positions among Russian universities are occupied by Moscow, St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk State Universities. 13 universities participating to 5top100 Project entered Top 100, and FEFU ranked 18th among Russian universities in the QS University Rankings: BRICS. At the same time Far Eastern Federal University showed positive dynamics on the general background of Russian universities having lowered their positions.

"Universities participating to the 5top100 Project secured their last year's results, which is worthy, given the strong competition from other countries. Excellent positive dynamics was demonstrated by Tomsk State University, MEPhI National Research Nuclear University, Higher School of Economics, MISiS National University of Science and Technology, FEFU, and Lobachevsky University. We endeavor to grow the quality of Russian universities, and they showed good results in the subsequent rankings," commented the Deputy Minister of Education and Science of the Russian Federation Alexander Povalko.

The FEFU Vice President for Strategic Development Office representatives link the outcome results with a number of system development activities and projects aimed at enhancing the University competitiveness in the international market of educational and research products. Thus, the proportion of international students at FEFU in the academic year 2015-2016 exceeded 13% of the University enrollment, and their total number has increased by 36% compared to the previous year. The geography of international students studying at FEFU expanded from 35 to 47 countries.

In addition, the number of international academics and researchers, belonging to the category of highly qualified specialists, has increased. This fact was reflected in the growth of the publication activity and it also increased the quality of the articles in international journals, expressed in the number of their citations.

The criteria used to create the BRICS ranking are as follows: teaching, research, international orientation and training of graduates with good prospects for employment. The ranking of universities considers the number of research papers published per academic staff member, faculty/student ratio, and the percentage of international faculty and students in these universities.

Starting from 2014 FEFU has been participating in the Russian Academic Excellence Project (5top100 Project). The significant FEFU achievement during this time became its improved position in the QS World University Rankings: the University rose from the 700+ band to 650-700 band, despite the increased number of participants in the rankings. In 2016 FEFU strengthened in the QS University Rankings: Emerging Europe and Central Asia, where it moved eight ranking points up and ranked 78th. FEFU climbed by seven ranking points and ranked 18th in the National Ranking of Universities, which is compiled by the Interfax Information Services Group.
