Far Eastern Federal University won the leading positions among Russian universities in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. In 2016 FEFU has been ranked in four subject rankings in the Social Sciences & Management, and Life Science & Medicine subject areas.

According to the FEFU Vice President for Strategic Development Gennady Molchanov, the University has become the third one in three subjects in the QS World University Rankings by Subject—Law, Agriculture & Forestry, and Sociology. In addition, FEFU took the fifth place in Economics and Econometrics subject area. It should be noted that over the past year, Far Eastern Federal University has significantly improved its positions in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, where in 2015 it was presented only in two subject rankings.

"FEFU is challenged by the ambitious task to enhance international competitiveness, including a sustainable advance in the leading world rankings. This requires great efforts and imaginative solutions, and the University is already showing some results", says Gennady Molchanov.

Starting from 2014 FEFU has been participating in the Russian Academic Excellence Project (5top100 Project). From 2016 the position in the QS World University Rankings by Subject becomes the same important target as the position in the QS World University Rankings. In this connection a particular importance in advancing the University is acquired by the Schools, which serve as the centers of excellence in their areas of expertise.

QS World University Rankings by Subject are compiled annually based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact in the following five subject areas: Art & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences & Management.

It should be noted that Far East Federal University consistently improves its positions in the major international rankings. On results of 2015 FEFU moved up from 700+ band to 651–700 band in the QS World University Rankings, despite the increase in the total number of universities participating in the rankings. In 2016 the University climbed eight points in the QS Emerging Europe & Central Asia Rankings, where it takes the 78th place, and it has been ranked in the Top 100 of the QS World University Rankings: BRICS for several consecutive years as well.
