The international round table "North Korea and the Current Situation on the Korean Peninsula" brought together the world's leading experts on the DPRK's domestic and foreign policy in an online format at the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU). The speakers were specialists from Russia, Mongolia, the Republic of Korea, China, Japan, the USA, and Europe. The participants analyzed the economic and social situation in the DPRK, and also made some assumptions about the internal political dynamics in this country, which is considered one of the most closed and therefore mysterious states of the modern world.

According to the organizers of the round table, the participants also discussed security issues on the Korean Peninsula related to the North Korean nuclear missile program. The discussion was joined by Master’s Degree Students of International Relations program (FEFU Institute of Oriental Studies - School of Regional and International Studies) and the Hanguk University of International Studies.

“Russia strives to maintain good-neighborly relations with the DPRK. It is only 150 kilometers from Vladivostok to the border with the DPRK. This closeness is one of the reasons why we are not indifferent to what is happening in North Korea. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, 2020 has proved to be an extremely difficult year for all countries of the world. But it is especially difficult for the DPRK, because of the impact of sanctions and natural disasters”, said Victoria Panova, FEFU Vice-President for International Relations.

Far Eastern Federal University has a long history of cooperation with higher educational institutions and educational organizations of the DPRK. To date, three cooperation agreements have been signed between FEFU and universities such as Kim Il Sung University, Pyongyang University of Foreign Languages and Kim Chaek Polytechnic University. According to an intergovernmental agreement between the Russian Federation and the DPRK, from 10 to 12 North Korean postgraduates in Natural Science and humanities are trained annually at Far Eastern Federal University.
