Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) has acted as one of the founders of the Association of Classical Universities of the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China. Nikita Anisimov, the FEFU Interim President, took part in the first congress of the association and the forum of university presidents of the two countries. The events took place in Shenzhen on September 13, under the chair of Olga Golodets, the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, and Liu Yandong, the Vice Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China. 

“FEFU, as the leading university of the Russian Far East, is the driver of the development of Russian–Chinese partnership in the region. We expect that our participation in the association will give a new impetus to bilateral contacts in education and research,” said Nikita Anisimov. “Already today, together with leading universities and research institutions of China, we implement priority projects; we receive more than 2,000 Chinese students annually. Far Eastern Federal University is becoming one of the key universities for the export of Russian education to China." 

Far Eastern Federal University is developing cooperation with 50 universities and research centers of China. The parties successfully implement joint academic programs, exchange students and faculty, engage in research in the field of biomedicine, jurisprudence, study the World Ocean and the Arctic. The first Confucius Institute in Russia was opened in partnership with Heilongjiang State University. The Joint Institute for Marginal Seas and Arctic Studies, established together with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, is successfully operating at the FEFU Law School. The FEFU School of Engineering and the Harbin Institute of Technology launched the Russian–Chinese Polar Engineering Center. 

The Association Congress and forum gathered representatives of 20 Russian and 68 Chinese universities in Shenzhen. The participants discussed the development of the partnership between Russia and China in higher education and research, support of young talents.

The Memorandum on the establishment of the Association of Classical Universities was signed in July 2016 as part of the XVII meeting of the Russian–Chinese Commission for Humanitarian Cooperation. This is the tenth interuniversity association created for the development of academic and research cooperation between the two countries.
