Technical and economic assessment
of the designed geometrical elements of motor roads

Annotation: The degree of efficiency of design solutions incorporated in road construction projects is largely determined by the quality of the technical and economic assessment, both in the design of new roads and in the reconstruction of existing structures, which necessarily requires revision of certain parameters of the geometric elements of the road.
One of the primary design standards that ensures safety is proper visibility on the road, which constantly varies due to curvature in plan and profile. Due to insufficient visibility on the road motor vehicles have to drastically reduce the driving speed on curves and adjacent straight sections. Irregular acceleration and deceleration lead to an increased number of accidents in such areas. The main way to improve vehicle traffic along small radius curves is to rebuild the curves to ensure wider radius. When reconstructing curves with an increase in the turning radius, the number of accidents decreases depending on the value of the parameter – from 18 to 80%, and the visibility on the curves improves by 30%. As an option to solve the problem of assigning proper geometric elements in road construction projects, the article presents an algorithm for choosing the best option for one of the main parameters assigned during the reconstruction of a motor highway – the radius of the curve in the plan. The principal basis of the developed algorithm is the comparison of public costs throughout the period of comparison of available options with due consideration for time diversity in relation to the year when the designed road section is commissioned. In addition to construction and road maintenance costs, the costs borne by the road users − transport and maintenance costs, social and economic losses − are included in the composition of the public costs of each considered option.
Keywords: radius of the curve, traffic safety, road maintenance costs, transportation and maintenance costs, social and economic losses, discounted costs.
