Features of the behavior of the floating transfer dock

Abstract: As a part of Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex in the town of Bolshoi Kamen there is floating transfer dock Vympel with cargo capacity of 40,000 tons, purposed for putting afloat large-sized marine vessels and elements of drilling platforms from a slipway. It was built in China, and is the largest dock of this kind in Russia; any in-service experience of such facilities in our country is practically absent. In the view of its large size and absence of continuous beams along its entire length, this dock is of a considerable flexibility which can significantly affect the stress-strain state of dock-vessel system during dock operations. The fact that this dock is unsupported leads to additional complexities. The paper deals with some issues of statics, dynamics and strength of the dock when putting afloat a supertanker-type vessel. Traditional methods of theoretical and structural engineering of maritime vessels and three-dimensional modeling of the dock structure were used. It is evident that due to increased flexibility of the dock application of these methods in evaluation of dock behavior can result in inaccurate results. Some issues relevant to the technology of carrying out docking operations are considered as well. In order to improve safety of docking operations further experimental (full-scale) studies are desirable.
Keywords: floating transfer dock, shipbuilding complex Zvezda, stress-strain state, dock statics.
