Design of bulwark stanchion:
effect of the shear force on its flexibility

Abstract: In order to avoid frequent damage to bulwarks on vessels built in different countries with different design options, a systematic analysis of interrelations of design solutions at different stages of the vessel’s life cycle is required. The authors of this article present a model experiment that allows to obtain the shape of the elastic line of the bulwark stanchion under the influence of the shear force. The effect of varying the dimensions of the stanchion permitted in compliance with the existing regulatory documents, on the bulwark flexibility in the longitudinal direction, has been determined. The series of diagrams characterizing the bulwark flexibility, depending on its design, have been built. The results of this work can be used in design and operation of vessels.
Keywords: bulwark stanchion, bulwark flexibility, coefficient of rigidity, bulwark-ship hull system, elastic line.
