Wireless broadband technologies:
assessment of the applicability in vessel traffic management system

Abstract: The latest advances in wireless technologies allow mobile users to access various data services anytime and anywhere on land. However, ensuring reliable data transmission for maritime users is a one of the difficult tasks due to the nature of radio waves spreading over the sea surface, the consequence of which are fading and inter-symbol interference (ISI), which adversely affect the quality of the transmitted information. In view of the fact that the communication and data transfer networks of vessel traffic management systems (CDTN VTMS) are one of the key components of the navigation safety, it is necessary to develop maritime communication supporting high-speed data transmission speeds and extended coverage. The article discusses the application of wireless broadband access (WBA) technology in the CDTN VTMS, using the domestic WANFleX operating system as an alternative to satellite and radio relay links. The use of a wireless radio interface can provide high line-of-sight reliability over a distance of more than 80 km, and transceiver equipment can be located on existing radio relay stations, reducing capital construction costs. An innovative aspect of such approach is that in Russia the WBA technology has not previously been used in the VTSS VTS. The article discusses the application of WBA technology based on the WANFleX operating system developed by the domestic company InfiNet Wireless.
Keywords: wireless broadband access, CDTN VTMS, inter-symbol interference, WANFleX, radio-relay link.
