Calculation of resistance of passenger catamarans:
methods comparison

Abstract: There is a steady tendency to increase passenger traffic in the Socialist Republic of Vi-etnam (SRV). This tendency leads to updating the existing fleet with modern vessels which satisfy requirements for comfort and safety. The catamarans type vessels are fully satisfy these require-ments as passenger vessels. The shipbuilding industry development in the SRV involves the crea-tion and improvement of its national production, scientific and technological bases, as well as the development and implementation of new methods and models for design and building of ships. Thus, the initial design stage of catamaran vessels is the important stage in ship design process and the choice of appropriate resistance calculation method also has a great importance. The choice is based on similarity of line drawing, hull form coefficients and main dimensions of the project with the same parameters of tested model series. However, similarity of main dimensions does not guarantee the acceptable accuracy of calculation results. The methods of catamaran resistance calculation which are recommended by various authors give significantly different results, which require preliminary work aimed to the search of an appropriate method. The final method is planned to be applied as a core of mathematical model in designing of passenger catamarans for the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
This paper describes the results of comparative analysis of catamaran resistance calculation meth-ods which are used at the initial stage of design. The comparison of calculation results with sea trial test of passenger catamaran Moscow which operates between Vladivostok and Popov Island.
Keywords: Socialist Republic of Vietnam, passenger catamarans, water resistance, calculation methods, sea trials.
