Research highlights:

The program includes the study of physiological and reparative regeneration mechanisms of human visceral and sensory systems in health and disease. In particular, FEFU scientists are recognized as leading experts in Russia and abroad in the field of studying the structures of the human organ of vision and its prenatal development. There were successfully completed 17 projects, 8 of which are present data on the study of the structures of the human eye in health and disease. Within the framework of this program, leading morphologists are conducting innovative developments to create morphological criteria for the diagnosis of malignancy in the field of dermatology, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, gastroenterology, surgery, as evidenced by the registration of 12 patents for inventions in various medical fields.

Within the framework of the declared program, scientific work is being successfully carried out to establish the patterns of development of the organ of vision in onto- and phylogenesis, the sources of the rudiments of various structures development in the human eye are being clarified; the role of immunocytes in the formation and isolation of the structures of the human eye is revealed, the role of neuroglia in the formation of transparent media of the human eye is shown; on the basis of the discovery of the tissue organization of the vitreous body and phenotyping of vitreous hyalocytes with the solution of the issue of their histophysiological significance in the structure of the organ of vision, as well as the identification of microorganisms in the structure of the vitreum, an infectious concept of the pathogenesis of glaucoma, recognized in Russia and abroad, was put forward. The establishment of two sources of development of the human eye lens made it possible to identify new directions for the study of some congenital eye pathologies associated with impaired migration of neuroglia into the structures of transparent media.

Scientific data obtained by FEFU scientists are prerequisites for the emergence of new ways in the study of physiological regeneration in the structures of various organs and tissues, mechanisms of carcinogenesis, infectious diseases, transplantation, open up wide opportunities for the development of new strategies in the development of cellular technologies used in various fields of medical science. Within the framework of the program, data on the mechanisms of reparative regeneration in conditions of carcinogenesis, in case of burns, infectious, somatic and endocrine diseases of a person will be completed and supplemented. The model of carcinogenesis by R. Correa (1998) has been improved in the light of new data obtained by scientists from FEFU. Special attention in the research program is paid to the least studied issues of the development of regenerative medicine in gerontological groups of patients to reduce morbidity and mortality in age-related pathology.

The School of Medicine has highly qualified specialists – cell biologists and cytologists, doctors of medical sciences, possessing a complex of modern immunological and cytomorphological techniques that allow to study the mechanisms of cell regeneration, proliferation and differentiation. A scientific direction is being developed to study the mechanisms of reactivity of cells of innate and adaptive immunity in inflammatory diseases of infectious and non-infectious genesis.

Research work is planned within the framework of the experimental induction of the immune system functions by biologically active substances (BAS) from plant and marine organisms. Research within the framework of this program will make it possible to establish the molecular and cellular mechanisms of natural biologically active substances action on cells of innate and adaptive immunity, laying the foundation for the creation of original and effective drugs, dietary supplements and functional food products.

Studies of key signaling pathways of cells in local immune homeostasis, intercellular interactions that form a chain reaction of genetically determined biochemical mechanisms of a functional response are fundamental for any field of medicine. The implementation of the scientific program will be carried out by representatives and founders of scientific schools "Clinical morphology of visceral systems and the organ of vision", "Biological and medical approaches in the treatment of burn injury", which are considered leading scientists not only in Russia, their merits are recognized abroad.

An example of effective research is the fact that since 2013 at FEFU, within the framework of specialty 1.5.22 - cell biology (medical sciences), 7 dissertations have been completed, 4 – for a degree “Candidate of medical sciences” and 3 – for a degree “Doctor of medical sciences” have been defended and recognized by Russian academy of sciences. The successful implementation of the program is guaranteed by the experience of the research team that has completed dissertation research in the specialties of surgery, ophthalmology, dentistry, internal medicine, dermatovenerology and oncology, based on the analysis of data obtained by morphological and molecular genetic methods. At the present stage, there is no clinical research studies that do not touch upon the issues of cellular mechanisms in the pathogenesis of diseases and morphological changes in the structure involved in the pathological process. In the collective use laboratories of the FEFU Medical School, the study of the damaged structures regeneration of nervous tissue in people from different age groups is being carried out: the effect of pharmacological drugs on embryogenesis, teratogenicity, and regeneration processes in the age aspect is being investigated. There is experience in studying the possibility of using radiation therapy after targeted delivery of a nanoparticle to a tumor cells. FEFU guarantees financial, organizational and technical support for the activities of scientific groups. The university has the necessary premises and equipment for conducting scientific research. FEFU has technical capabilities for conducting distance classes and for holding online lectures using telecommunications network, which is confirmed by the positive experience of such broadcasts. FEFU is able and guarantees to ensure the work of young scientists at a high level.

Within the framework of the program, wide cooperation is planned both with leading research teams of universities in Russia, and international with universities in Europe, USA, and Japan. There will be involved in financing research projects pharmaceutical companies in Russia, Japan and Europe, as well as manufacturers of medical devices for use in various medical industries.
