May 11, 2017 - International cooperation

Far East Federal University (FEFU) and Tokai University (Tokai Educational System) have entered into an agreement on the exchange of students and research fellows. Nikita Anisimov, FEFU Interim President, and Kiyoshi Yamada, Tokai University President, signed the document during the visit by the Japanese university delegation to Vladivostok on 28 April.

Universities expect to establish regular exchanges of students and researchers this coming year. The start can be a joint medical education program: the application to provide grant support for the program has been submitted to the Government of Japan. Participants will be able to take both short-term two-week internships, and longer ones—up to a year—with the opportunity to transfer credits earned to their universities. The FEFU Medical Center and the Tokai University Hospital will be the main venues for the training.

At the meeting in FEFU, Russian and Japanese scientists also discussed the expansion of ties and the establishment of joint research units focused on research in climate studies, genomic medicine, anthropology, archeology, jurisprudence, economics, international relations, and other fields. Representatives of each of the FEFU Schools and the Tokai University institutions described the priority areas of work and, in the format of bilateral meetings, talked about launching specific projects.

“I am sure that such mutual interest of our universities will transform into successful research and educational projects. We are geographically close to each other and always open to cooperation,” said Nikita Anisimov. “All this clearly corresponds to the agreements reached by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during the meeting at the Eastern Economic Forum in FEFU. Besides, it is already known that 2018 will be declared the year of Russia in Japan and Japan in Russia.”

“The visit of the Tokai University delegation is an opportunity to establish strong ties with Far East Federal University. We are convinced that cooperation in the field of science and education is the way to strengthen and expand the relationship between Russia and Japan,” said Kiyoshi Yamada.

Far East Federal University has been intensively developing ties with Japan. Last week, FEFU Interim President Nikita Anisimov visited Hokkaido University, where the prospects for joint research in biophysics, radiation biology and medicine, the launch scientific laboratory network, and exchange programs were discussed. The proposal to expand cooperation was also received from Mitsubishi Corporation, which is willing to finance the creation of a Center for the Study of Russian–Japanese Relations in FEFU, to provide scholarships and grants for students.

To date, FEFU has entered into partnership agreements with 37 universities and research centres of the Land of the Rising Sun.
