Topics of the department's current research projects:
- Sustainable development of the region: effective economic mechanisms for organizing markets and entrepreneurial competencies of the population in conditions of uncertainty (balance of security and risk), FZNS-2023-0016, 2023-25 (state assignment of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation);
- Theory of market organization;
- Theory of economic mechanisms;
- Experimental and behavioral economics;
- Spatial economics.
Information about the topic and content of the SRP:
1. Name of the SRP: Gravity approach to modeling interregional and international trade: cross-country analysis.
2. The field of sciences and scientific directions of the SRP in accordance with the International Science Map of the Olympiad: economics and Econometrics;
3. The acceptable working languages of the research group during the project are Russian and English.;
4. The purpose of the project:
The study of inter-regional and international trade using the tools of gravity models and the comparison of the results obtained from data from different countries.
5. Project objectives:
1. Assessment of the elasticity of trade in the studied countries by the economic size of the regions (GRP), as well as by the distance between them.
2. Identification of additional factors that have a significant impact on trade: the proximity of regions, the presence or absence of railways in the region, land or sea borders with other countries, the share of the industrial sector, unemployment, price levels, etc.
3. The study of various ways of measuring distances between regions and the impact of the choice of calculation method on the quantitative estimates of models.
4. Analysis of the stability of the obtained coefficient estimates when changing the model settings: the observation period, the estimation method, the composition of the regressors included in the model, the method of calculating the distance matrix, etc.
5. Comparative analysis of the results obtained from different countries. An economic explanation of the differences identified. Recommendations in the context of public policy measures.
6. Description of the scientific approach
The project uses a gravity-based approach to trade modeling, proposed in [Tinbergen, 1962] and developed in numerous subsequent papers. In particular, the results of a meta-study of international trade for different product groups and regions of the world are presented in the article [Head, Mayer, 2014]. For evaluation, it is assumed to use both classical OLS on an adjusted data sample, tobit models, the Heckman filter, and Poisson regression. A similar study conducted on Russian data is presented in [Filatov and Salnikov, 2025].
